The School of Nursing at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center completed interviews with registered nurses who have used Therapeutic Touch to treat preterm infants. Future research can focus on measuring the outcomes nurses described to determine if Therapeutic Touch consistently causes improvements.
Anna's comments: I've been asked recently whether energy healing helps children, but there is very little pediatric research. I believe this is because parents try every treatment immediately when their children have health problems, preventing scientific testing of one treatment at a time. As a parent, it's certainly the right thing to do, but it's frustrating from a research perspective.

Researchers at Prince of Wales Hospital in Hong Kong reviewed studies of the effectiveness of Healing Touch, Therapeutic Touch and Reiki on chronic pain. From 24 studies totaling 1123 participants, they found energy healing reduced pain an average of 0.83 units on a zero to ten pain scale. They noted that the practitioners in the Reiki studies were more experienced and yielded greater pain reduction. It was unclear whether this was because of the practitioners' experience or if Reiki is more effective than Healing Touch and Therapeutic Touch.
