Both studies examine Therapeutic Touch (TT), an energy healing modality very similar to Reiki. TT was developed by a nurse, so it has become the go-to modality for energy healing research.
In Ontario, Canada, researchers at McMaster Children's Hospital found Therapeutic Touch (TT) is safe for preterm infants and may benefit them. Preterm infants with very low birth weights are born with impaired parasympathetic nervous systems (PNS), which may limit their responses to feeding, their growth and their future development. The study found that TT increased heart period variability (HPV), a measure indicating improved PNS function.
In simple terms, energy healing may help preterm infants grow and develop more like full term infants. However, this research was the first double-blind study of TT use with preterm infants and only followed 20 infants over three days, so it’s too early to jump to any conclusions.

The Elderly and Therapeutic Touch
Researchers from the Department of Occupational Therapy and Occupational Science at the University of Missouri-Columbia found that Therapeutic Touch (TT) significantly reduced post-surgical pain among elderly participants.
Participants were split into control, experimental and placebo groups. Pain was assessed before and after the treatment using three established pain scales, and pulse rate and pupil size were also measured.
Researchers reported that 73% of the experimental group demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in pain and improved participation in occupations following TT therapy.
